I teach because I feel like I am doing something with my life. I feel God blessed me with patience and the ability to teach, and I am fulfilling his mission for my life by helping others. It is selfless, unending work that leaves me feeling exhausted, physically, mentally and emotionally. I spent 8 years of my life in college preparing to be a teacher ( I have a Masters) and I get paid less than I did when I was a secretary, which was A LOT less stress and work. Society sends us not only their good kids, but ALL their kids, and we are expected to do miracles with many of them. And usually we do. I teach my students to stand up and speak out when something is unfair or someone is being treated unequally. So I stand 100% behind those teachers striking in Chicago. I only hope the movement continues across the country. However, Unions NEED to stop protecting BAD teachers! They make the whole profession look bad.
Some days I feel like quitting and doing something easier. But I know when I look back at my life, I will know that I did well.
