This iReport is part of an assignment:
    Nerd pilgrimages

    CERN, Nerd Heaven

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Having been to CERN four times already, willdrawdy says he has loved and learned something new every time. "I was moved," he says. " The great things that come form CERN have been and will be amazing."
    - Anika3, CNN iReport producer

The Center for European Nuclear Research sounds like a place no one would want to visit, unless you are a nerd. The large hadron collider located here is the latest machine on earth. To top it off, it smashes stuff. Sounds awesome, huh? All the things smashed are too small to see with the human eye, though. The scientist here are looking for particles that haven't been proven actually exist. Why would so many countries invest in such a place. Technologies that have risen form CERN are found in our lives everyday. The World Wide Web is the most well known. Working in combination with Swiss hospitals they created the first PET scanners and provided tech that allowed the combination of PET and MRI to work in the same machine. I don't think it is possible to get more nerdy than that! More information can be found at
