Hurricane Isaac: After the Storm, Part II

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     patticarol captured these photographs while driving through Louisiana. She says the area was covered with yellowing marsh grass, and there as debris scattered everywhere. While passing through the area, she says the place reeked of stagnant water, chemical drums and decaying animal carcasses. 'I was overwhelmed with sadness and outrage as this is my hometown, although I moved away long ago,' she said. She says she went back to Braithwaite, Louisiana to help with the clean up effort after the hurricane.
    - Jareen, CNN iReport producer

A week ago I was driving "down the road" the 6.5 miles to Aloma and Kenneth Savastano's home after Hurricane Isaac. The sights and smell were overwhelming. I hope to never again, see or smell what I saw that day and coming days.

The marsh water flood line was/is evident by the marsh grass along the Mississippi River levee. Boats, caskets, tombs, houses, playground equipment, trash cans, chairs, and dead horses are some of what I noticed driving along. Some areas had more than others. The smell was pungent and foul with a combination of stagnating water, chemicals and decaying animals.

Interesting that the following day as I exited the ferry and headed the 6.5 miles south down the road for day 2 of the clean up, I didn't notice the smell. The Savastano's youngest daughter (also a great friend) did.
