I traveled to southern Guyana last month and had to be taken into the jungle lodge by ox cart. What should have taken two hours took eight. The ox on the left was weak and she kept sitting down in the deep mud and water filled pools that we had to cross. She had a lot to pull-a wooden cart filled with supplies and four people. The driver got fed up half way through the journey and walked back to the village for a different ox leaving my young guide, the driver's son and myself for hours in the heat until he returned. The boy in the picture is the driver's son. We had not reached the jungle yet at this point, we were still in the savannah when the ox 'broke down' the first time. I was sitting in the cart in a huge mud puddle when I snapped this shot of the boy holding on to the oxen.
