Speech of Comrade Wije Dias at the Book Launch "Back in Time"

Sri Lanka Socialist Equality Party general secretary and WSWS International Editorial Board member Wije Dias delivered a speech on the topic " Karl Marx's 'Capital' and the Present Global Economic Crisis at National Library Auditorium, Colombo, on 14th September 2012. He had been invited as the main speaker for the book-lunching Ceremony of the Sinhalese Translation of "Back in Time: My Life My Fate My Epoch, The Memoirs of Nadezhda A. Joffe ". The English version of this book has been published by the Mehring Books, USA.

Comrade Dias, in his 52 min speech, summarized several key points of the present global economic crisis and the necessity of independent working class struggle for international Socialism. He pointed out that the present global economic crisis has no way back to the status quo that was before 2008 and the world is going to more economic and social chaos. United States is no more the savior of the global capitalist economy.

Dias made it clear that the world economy is not the collective of separate economies of nation states of the world but it is a unique international phenomenon, a globally interconnected economy, the problems and solutions of which are only of International dimension.

He tried to explain briefly the development of the contradictions of the boundaries of nation state and the development of the productive forces, which is privately owned in the capitalist system. The nation state system lies in the way of the development of productive forces. These contradictions were to be seen even at the inception of the 20th Century, which ultimately led to the world wars for the reinstitution of the capitalist economy.

Dias added, “the world has two selections; either Socialism or Barbarism. The way to Socialism needs the leadership of a world party of a Bolshevik kind. It is the Socialist Equality Party of the International Committee of the Fourth International that has inherited this legacy of the historical lessons and the perspective.”

His speech included more illuminating points. Especially, he shed light on the understanding of bankruptcy of Trade Union activities in this epoch of capitalist doom in contrast to the old years of capitalist boom.

His complete speech which he delivered in Sinhalese will be posted.
