    Drag Boat Disintegrated

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     jimginsd, a photographer for the San Diego Community News Group, was covering the drag-boat qualifiers at the San Diego Bayfair on Saturday and witnessed the high-powered hydroplane break apart in Mission Bay. After the rescue team lifted the driver out of his capsule, the crowd learned that the driver was safe and unhurt.

'This type of racing is one of the most exciting things you can watch -- the scream of the motors, the giant water spray behind the boats, the smell of the fuel, the flames coming off the engines -- it is truly a big-time rush watching these missiles on the water,' he says.
    - dsashin, CNN iReport producer

San Diego is one of the stops for the Worlds Fastest Boats , The Unlimited Hydroplanes and 8 other divisions of racing boats including Drag Boats.  Yesterday while watching and photographing the qualifying heats for the Top Alcohol Drag Boats I witnessed this spectacular crash. First off the driver was shaken and stirred but not hurt!!
His boat Totally disintegrated right from under him.
When he came off the starting line he wobbled a couple times each time a little harder and deeper into the salty Mission Bay water. He kept on the throttle and went airborne when he hit the water his boat disappeared into thousands of pieces. These drivers are enclosed in a safety capsule . That capsule is designed to break free from the boat it is water tight and has an oxygen supply and it floats . The rescue team was at the capsule within 25 seconds and quickly hauled the Driver Joe Blattler out of the water and whisked him away to be examined where he was deemed to be fine although shaken up. These boats have up to 2000HP and go 160 MPH....All that was left was a few pieces of the hull and the motor....The boats name was Pure Nasty...The accident was as well but the good news the driver was not injured.
