    Shuttle flies over New Orleans

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     techchris told me, 'I'm sad to see the end of the program and I had hoped to see the X33 succeed as a replacement. Commercial spaceflight looks like it will be the answer but I feel it will end up being nothing more than a pastime for millionaires and billionaires with little application for science and virtually no chance at giving the masses a chance to experience spaceflight. I hope that I am wrong because I would one day like to see the earth from space.'
    - hhanks, CNN iReport producer

This morning at NASA's Michoud Assembly plant in Eastern New Orleans approximately 1,000 people gathered outside the gates to witness the last flight Space Shuttle Endeavor would ever make.

Some waited for hours and brought their children with them to witness this historic occasion. There were many people with cameras and some just there to witness the experience.

This reporter waited almost one hour with a rambunctious 4-year old asking a never ending stream of questions about the Saturn rocket just inside the gate.

Then off in the distance was the familiar shape of a 747 but it had a distinctly unfamiliar profile as it flew closer. It had a Space Shuttle attached to its upper fuselage and as it flew the crowd grew quiet and all I heard were oohs and ahhs and the clicking of camera shutters.

It was an experience I will never forget and I'm sure many others felt the same way.
