    Giant Victoria Amazonica Lily Pads

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     iguanamom70 was traveling through Yupukari, Guyana, between the months of August and September. It was there that she photographed the Victoria amazonica lily pads. 'I just gasped when we floated into the lake. It was like nothing I've ever seen in my life. It was peaceful, stunning and like I just arrived into the Land of the Lost,' she said. She spent time traveling through Guyana by herself. She says the country can be challenging to be in, especially at the end of the rainy season. Her fifth photo was featured as CNN's Travel Photo of the Day for October 30, 2012.
    - Jareen, CNN iReport producer

While traveling in southern Guyana along the Rupununi River, my guide would paddle through a flooded forest which led to an incredible sight. A huge opening into a lake revealed these Victoria Amazonica lily pads with large flowers floating next to them. At night, the flowers slowly open and huge beetles fly into them and pollinate them overnight. In the morning, the flowers turn from white to pink (male to female) and the beetles start their day all over again.

Caiman, birds, frogs and fish were all seen in these lakes and the most fabulous sunsets, too! It was certainly a trip of a lifetime.
