Deaths in the NFL
Steve Sabol, the voice and face of NFL Films lost his fight to brain cancer on September 18th. He had an inoperable brain tumor. Sabol won over 40 Emmys for his work at NFL films and was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003. He was 69 and two weeks from his 70th birthday.
The Baltimore Ravens play the New England Patriots tonight with a heavy heart. Their longtime owner Art Modell died on September 6th at the age of 87. Art Modell took over ownership of the Clveland Browns in 1961 and then relocated the team to Baltimore in 1996 to become the Ravens. He won an NFL Championship with the Browns in 1964 and then won Super Bowl XXXV with the Baltimore Ravens 36 years later.
But nobody on the Ravens will play with a heavier heart than wide receiver Torrey Smith. Last night he lost his 19 year old brother Tevin Jones in a motorcycle accident. He left the Ravens' hotel at 2am this morning to be with his family in northern Virginia after telling coach John Harbaugh he still wanted to play. Torrey is in uniform and on the field for the Ravens tonight.
