A Sacred Place Indeed
- Jamescia, CNN iReport producer
A first for both of us was visiting Sacre'-Coeur Basilica (Sacred Heart). We loved it so much, we had to visit it again the night before we left. This church is so beautiful. It truly leaves you speechless. The forward, interior, domed ceiling at the front altar is filled with the most beautiful, colorful mosaic. We remember the colors as brilliant, golds, yellows and blues. I don't have any photos of the interior. As we entered the church, a very sweet man greeting us told me, as he pointed at my not so subtle camera "NO PHOTOS ON THE INSIDE". I abided by the rule. My daughter and I have our memories though of the interior of this spectacular church.
On our first visit we walked the 250 or so steps up to the dome of the Basilica. This walk takes you up a narrow, spiraled staircase and then you walk along the perimeter of the outside of the building before heading back inside to another narrow, spiral staircase to walk the final steps to the dome. From the dome you have a 360 degree view of Paris from high above the city. The day we walked to the top, the sun was shining, the weather perfect although very, very windy at the top. We found it unusual that except for two other people we had the view all to ourselves.
I will never forget my daughter's emotion, the basilica or the view of Paris. Simply amazing.
