    Canadians recieving Social Security Legally

Recently I was having dinner with my in laws and their friends who were visiting from Canada. Irene, a German national, came to the United States as a foreign exchange student in the 60s. She married, had children, worked for a period of time and ultimately divorced. She met Ed, a Canadian and moved to Canada where they married and raised a family. They have been together in Canada for about 20 years. While visiting my in laws Irene stopped at a social security office to apply for her social security benefits. While in the office they were informed that because Ed was married to Irene, he qualifies for monthly benefits as well. He has never worked a day in our country.
I want social security to continue, but this story upsets me on many levels. Ed obviously as a Canadian who never worked in the US should qualify for nothing. Irene who though she worked here for a while has not lived in the country for decades. She is receiving this money without residency here for the duration of her life, and that money is being spent in a foreign country supporting their economy, not ours. Social security is in danger. This type of waste cannot continue. I don't know how many more stories are similar to this but social security should support US residents and our economy. Reform should start here.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
