Tunnel to Towers 5K Run Part 2

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     jcshao says she was woken up today by the sound of bagpipes and cheering. "It continued for half an hour, so I finally decided to roll out of bed and see what was going on. Good thing I did because the run was happening right outside my doorstep!" she says. The run turned out to be the annual 5k Tunnel to Towers, an event to remember and honor firefighters who perished on 9/11.

For the run, participants retrace the last footsteps that FDNY firefighter Stephen Siller took on that devastating day in an effort to help survivors. "People from all walks of life were participating in the run. There were teams of marines, veterans, firefighters, and families that were wearing t-shirts bearing the name of the person that perished," she says. "As runners emerged from the tunnel, many stopped to shake hands with firefighters bearing a flag, representing a fallen coworker from their squadron or battalion. The crowd along the route was very encouraging and cheering constantly, especially for those that were participating with their prosthesis." See more photos of the 5k Tunnel to Tower run here.
