One Pelican's Plight 1
I was in Dana Point recently and was appalled to see many birds that had swallowed fishing hooks, with the fishing lines still attached. They could not get the hooks dislodged from their beaks or throats. Some of the birds I found were already dead, probably the victim of hunger brought on from being incapacitated, ironically, with hooks and lines still in their mouths. One live pelican in particular was really suffering; the hook he had swallowed had pierced the flap under his mouth and gone clear through his wing too, at the "elbow" joint. So flying was really difficult for this poor bird; every time he tried to extend his right wing it would pull the skin around his throat out and at the same time this restricted his wing movement...not to mention the pain this must have caused.
I encourage everyone to think of ways we can create awareness on the the part of civil authorities and of the fishermen (and women) who are carelessly allowing these birds to suffer. I hope this short video inspires creativity in action.
