October 5: Commemoration of the Republic of Portugal (II Part)

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     TTeixeira says October 5 was a holiday in Portugal, commemorating the anniversary of the Portuguese Republic. She says Internet activists called a demonstration, inciting people to march. She says this public holiday was actually abolished in Portugal's recent austerity measures. She says only a few hundred people marched, but they were persistent. She says with the government's new austerity measures, public discontent with the government continues to grow.
    - Jareen, CNN iReport producer

On the day of the Commemoration of the Republic of Portugal, a few hundreds of activists gathered downtown in Rossio and afterwards marched towards São Bento. There, in front of the Parliament they manifested against the new raise of taxes, the difficult conditions people are going through, the lack of jobs and shouted that they are being asked too many sacrifices. The protesters claimed against recession and the tremendous amount of debt plaguing the country. Some protesters were inciting the police to join the people and succeeded in throwing down the rails that prevented people from accessing the stairs to Parliament and that had as a consequence an immediate increase of the police. A group of youngsters threw empty bottles and petards to the police. Some were arrested and others identified. In the atmosphere there was a feeling of revolt. It was amazing as such a small group of protesters could create such a feeling!
