CNN PRODUCER NOTE iReporter Adam Ironside, a student from Wisconsin, saw these crowds in the centre of Athens protesting against a visit by German Chancellor Angela Merkel - despite a police ban on such protests. "There were cops all over the place and no traffic at all which is unusual here," he told CNN. "When we were at the protest it was peaceful, there were a lot of people, many with signs, one said 'Merkel go home'." Our iReporter, who is on exchange for a semester from his US college, said his classes were cancelled for the day as there were concerns over the students' safety. Critics see Merkel as the main enforcer of EU-imposed austerity measures that have impacted the country heavily.
