Travel photo of the day |
The road to Fairy Hill
Though Fairy Hill in Hawaii no longer looks like the first image pictured, he says he will always remember it that way. "They paved this road and now it is a super highway used by commuters. But it will always be that dreamy little highway for me," he says. "With the distant mountain calls and the yellow lines running into the horizon, you just want to keep going on forever."

Somehow, this image becomes a metaphor for all our lost backroads that are now gone, or that we can no longer remember our way back to.
Indeed, I like just pointing the car in a direction and then I light the after-burners. Sometimes random destinations are best and that's why the world's surface is curved: that way we cannot see too far ahead to where we're going to end up.
Most days I use the sun as my watch and compass.
The further I am from a phone and man: the better.
The second photo is from my back roads series: I've never been a main highway man. The wistful clouds call me. Drifter, wanderer, malcontent. I've been a drifter all my life. Born the next of kin to the wayward wind.
That's my sidekick on Route 66. She keeps me out of the ditches and honest with the highway patrol and customs agents. I should tell you about the night we went over the border into Mexico at Chula VIsta: it was at the height of the drug wars along the border.....but you probably wouldn't believe half the events I could write about. Perhaps another day.
