Out of sight, out of mind in Taipei?
Often news in Taiwan revolve around the sky-high realty prices in the capital Taipei, where prime condo suites in nicer neighborhoods can fetch US$28,000 a sq.ft. But few local reporters are aware or take for granted the sometimes freakish nature of culture in Taiwan, where bizarre is seen as normal. The high-rise condo in the background of the picture likely is priced US$27,000 a sq.ft. and would be an enviable home for most Taipei residents. That's until a few years ago when another even more posh condo was built nearby, with the builder taking care in traditional Taiwanese fashion to "keep up appearances." Hence the oddity of the seemingly semi-complete home in the foreground, which is a hovel in the back alley of the new condo. The builder simply put up a facade to mask the dilapidated home so as to match the tile work of the new, adjacent high-rise not seen in the photo.
