    Should affirmative action still exist?

In 1986 I was a Reporter at a Radio Station in a Small/Mid-Size South Texas Town.

An advertisement was placed for a Reporter at the local TV station. I had 8 years’ experience as a reporter, 5 years in that town. I carefully prepared a resume’ and a “Demo” Tape.

On the day of my interview, I put on my best suit and went to speak to the station’s News Director. While I filled out forms he left the room to view my “Demo” Tape. He returned excitedly 10 minutes later, asking me two wait while he spoke to the station’s General Manager. In another 10 minutes he returned looking disgusted. He took me to meet the General Manager, who told me that I had exactly the qualifications they wanted, I knew the local area, and my “Demo” Tape was one of the best he had ever seen.

He then looked me straight in the eye and said, “John, I can’t hire you, you’re White."

I was told to avoid problems with the E.E.O.C. the station had to hire a minority for the position despite the fact that I was the best qualified candidate.

Affirmative Action is a crutch for Minority Racists, and has no place in America.
