Severe Flooding in Egboama Ogbogolo in Rivers State

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     iReporter OguluVera sent in these images captured by her husband of flooding in his village Egboama Ogbogolo in Rivers State, Nigeria. "The situation very bad and most people have fled their homes as their properties have been destroyed," she says. "The government has set up camps in relatively safe areas, however the people trapped in the village are not catered for. Our house in the village that served as a camp for other victims is almost overrun, too." Flooding in recent weeks in Nigeria has been declared a national disaster by the president, with dozens killed, thousands displaced and large swathes of vital crop land destroyed.
    - sarahbrowngb, CNN iReport producer

Egboama Ogbogolo in Ahoada West Local Government Area in Rivers State is a minority oil producing area and has been severely hit by the current wave of flooding. The poverty level in the area is astronomical and people are unable to help themselves especially as No aid has come to them. Women now cook in canoes. People now bathe, defeacate and drink from the same water. The entire village is under water and the only house that is at the highest point in the village that was providing shelter for other flood victims is already threatended by flooding as at yesterday Oct 11, 2012. The last time this type of severe flooding occured was in 1969. That these people need help is an understatement of the fact.
