Hope 4 Today's Quiet Man Literacy Project hosted in Illinois School
Hope 4 Today, a national non-profit based in Chesterfield, MO provided bridge books to elementary students at Towanda Elementary, Illinois in time for Fall break. Seaman’s Journey with Lewis & Clark developed by authors Linda J. Couchman (Iowa), Linda Cook-Hailey (OK), and Linda Warner (OK) was distributed in Susan Steinbach’s fifth grade class. Linda Couchman, a retired educator, noted, “We have been fortunate to be able to provide bridge books to schools across the nation; the impact has been far greater than I ever imagined when we began the project.”
Susan Steinbach was pleased that the school had been chosen by an anonymous donor to provide a classroom set. “The books are wonderful and the class loved them. They couldn't believe they were theirs to keep!” George Briscoe II, Chairman of the Board for Hope 4 Today, observed the national appeal of The Corps of Discovery with children and adults. “Our Foundation’s mission supports lifelong learning and through our core values we hope to encourage students to be curious about their own world and about their own history. Our literacy initiative has reached over two dozen states and it continues to grow.”
“Educators created these bridge books with their own grandchildren in mind; the activities are based on the national standards in language arts, mathematics, science, and social science. Activities also portray the American Indian perspective as tribal people commemorate the expedition” stated Executive Director Linda Sue Warner. “Our literacy initiative continues to grow; this year we added Comes In Sight, a novel set at the end of the Indian Wars, and we anticipate adding Rigel’s Journey on the Titanic soon”.
