Reiterating Frederick Douglas- "Where justice is denied, where poverty is enforced, where ignorance prevails, and where any one class is made to feel that society is an organized conspiracy to oppress, rob and degrade them, neither persons nor property will be safe".
In line with the above...I think that a society where people take laws into their hands... to kill, in the name of metting out "jungle justice", as if there are no laid down laws; is a product of a system where human Rights and Limitations to these Rights, is totally absent, or simply not respected.
moreso, it reflects the impact of a long endured economic and political suppression of the masses; resulting from what i will term 'years of mis-placed priority agenda' of un-empathic administrations.
in the real sense, it seems like we operate a kind of "jungle society" where anything goes; only the politically and economically strong survives, every one hustles to belong to either of these two classes. any, who does not find themselves in either of these classes, simply becomes prey, even to your own kind.
i ask, "aside finance allocation and resource control policy", when was the last time our executive and legislative council sat, to delibrate on how to effectively implement policies concerning: creating awareness on the recognition of human right, priviledge, limitations to these rights, even civic duties and obligations of both government and the people?". these, i think, remain paramount to any meaningful development; otherwise, of what use is 'finance allocation and resource control policies, in the absense of security of lives?.
often times what is obtained are situations where legislators rush in to 'emmergency sittings' after heinious crimes has been perpetrated. (a medicine after death approach, if you ask me) and which is also easily forgotten or thrown aside, as soon as something new happens. atmost if the case is attended to, it takes ages, leaving the directly affected persons to nurse their pain. this is a totally unacceptable situation, for like the saying goes, "justice delayed is justice denied".
Recounting the numerous 'National and International HeadLine' generating news on: deadly communal clashes, kidnapping, brutal killing of some of our 'National Youth Service corp' participants in some Northern states, the 'Boko- Haram Menace', the october 1 massacre of about 25 students of the Federal Polytechnic Mubi - Adamawa State, Northern Nigeria by alledge security personnels; and the october 5 obnoxious killing of four students of the university of Port-Harcourt (Aluu four) in a nearby community called Aluu, Southern Nigeria, by some mob who identified themselves as 'local vigilante group'; at the command of the community leader, while some villagers watched. what was their crime? 'alledged stealing' of "laptop and cell phones", an allegation that has been proved to be false; but not after these young men (aged between 20 - 24 years) were stripped naked, lynched to a 'pulp' and burnt to death.
i ask... Where else are we safe?
Where else are our children safe?
What has become of our Nation?
Where are we headed?
A lot has been said and written on the 'aluu four case', eye witness accounts given over and over again, arrests made, abuses and curses hurled at perpetrators verbally and through social media, demonstrations from fellow students resulting in the touching of some properties in aluu community; helpful or not so helpful, as these has been...
I think the time has come for us to come together, and seek out effective ways of putting once and for all, and end to these unfortunate incidents.
To begin with, i eagerly await 'timely' Judicial rulings on apprehended Aluu and Mubi culprits.
