Red Bull Stratos Mission Roswell New Mexico Successful
- zdan, CNN iReport producer
Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner broke the speed of sound, at one point hitting Mach 1.24, according to a team official, during his record-setting jump from 128,000 feet
preliminary figures showed Felix Baumgartner reached a maximum speed of 833.9 miles per hour. The speed is equivalent to Mach 1.24 – faster than the speed of sound. Felix Baumgartner was lifted 128,097 feet into the air by a 700 foot tall stratospheric helium balloon before jumping, with only a pressurized suit to protect him from the bitter cold and pressure . Audiences watched his fall by the Red Bull Stratos Livestream. After about 5 minutes of falling, he pushed for his parachute, eventually coming down safely about four minutes later
