Orion the Hunter is a constellation which at this time of year rises in the early morning hours after midnight, and is in full view due south just before sunrise. The nebula is visible to the naked eye, but without magnification you would not know. The constellation depicts the Hunter with a belt of 3 stars, and a sword hanging from the belt. The 2nd, or middle star of the belt is in fact the nebula. You can confirm this yourself with just binoculars. I took this image with my new telescope and Nikon DLSR. It is a single frame, 60 seconds exposure. Happy star gazing!
