JOURNALISM IN SERBIA - TANJA JANKOVIC

What is the current situation in Serbian journalism?

The economic crisis and the generally bad situation in the country is also reflected in journalism in Serbia. State of the media in recent years is more than bad. Journalism is on the verge of going back to the 90s, when journalists barely survived. Journalists who do not have the "protection" of politicians and businessmen are losing their jobs and abillity to find another.

Does journalism in Serbia has the right people?

In every profession there is "wheat and chaff". I personally believe that in our country there are very high-quality journalists in all generations. Of course, every age brings its stars. There are people among older journalists who deserve our admiration and respect of younger and middle generation of journalists. Also among us there are excellent journalists who with no doubt deserve to compare them with the stars of CNN and BBC.

    Are journalists in Serbia safe?

I repeat - journalism and media scene in Serbia is going through a very difficult period, where all is reminiscent of the nineties. Here I mean the safety of journalists. WE are heading towards the European Union, we are talking about freedom of speech and democracy, and every day some journalist is attacked, he is threatened or he was beaten. This is outrageous and disastrous for the country. We do not need security, it is necessary for the state to deal with those who are doing it and when the first one is sentenced to the maximum sentence in prison, all the rest will be good to ask before they attack a journalist who's just doing his job.

    Your plans for your career?

I went through all the steps in journalism. I worked in daily newspapers, on radio and television. I was always striving to be first and to have what others do not. Often it cost me, but I do not regret it. Next I plan to prove myself in Internet journalism. I think this is the future and that the portals soon will be masters of the media in our country. After the new year i will take up the role of editor in chief of one portal. I have ambitions to make it, in the two years period, to the third place in Serbian media portals.
