American Airlines flies with piece missing from wing.

On a recent trip around the US we flew on American Airlines. One departure was delayed as the Auxiliary Power Unit on the plane failed after push back from the gate before the captain could start the engines. We were then towed back to the gate but were informed that they were also unable to connect to external power at the gate as there was a broken pin on the plane's power receptical. With all the problems going on with this airline I was beginning to wonder if flying with them was a sensible choice. However a few days later on a trip back home to Curacao I had a window seat and noticed a chunk of metal missing from one of the flaps on the right wing. On disembarking the plane I mentioned this fact to one of the attendants and all I got was " Is that so" as if this was an everyday occurrence - which I came to realize - perhaps it is now.
