Palm Oil: The European Commission’s act of deception in Africa!

Conventional wisdom questions how much can be accomplished with little. We tend to believe that a lot more can be done if we have large financial resources, talented manpower, and innovative ideas. But these things don’t matter to someone whose sense of fair-play has been aroused; especially when there is an all pervasive feeling of injustice as a result of the utterly ugly falsehoods being manufactured and perpetuated by a powerful body such as the European Commission (EC) against probably the most benign commodity, environmentally speaking, such as palm oil!

Thanks to conscientious organizations such as the Italian civil libertarian group, Libertiamo, the lack of moral fiber of the EC is laid bare for the world to see! Information sharing has also been democratized to a large extent by the internet and social media and organizations like the EC who had been engaging in a game of subterfuge against palm oil for some half a decade now, cannot hide behind the surrogate green groups whom they happily fund to run cynical palm oil campaigns ostensibly to propagate environmentalism in the developing world! In reality these campaigns are designed to prop up and protect EU based edible oilseed industries such as sunflower and rapeseed oils, which are unable to compete on a level playing field with the hyper yielding palm oil!

For instance, each hectare of palm oil plantation can produce a staggering 4-5 metric tons of edible oil and a best in class plantation can produce 8 metric tons of edible oil per hectare! Whilst EU sunflower oil farms produce a miniscule 0.53 metric tons of edible oil per hectare and rapeseed farms do not fare much better, hitting their genetic limit at 0.69 metric tons per hectare! Couple this with current R&D pointing to a potential genetic limit of 20 metric tons per hectare for palm oil, and it is little wonder why the EC should feel compelled to resort to underhanded schemes involving the funding of green groups to carry out patently dishonest palm oil campaigns based primarily on manufactured and false evidence against palm oil!
    (see: http://www.simedarbyplantation.com/upload/palmoilfactsandfigures.pdf)

In a paper entitled Taxpayer Funding, NGO Collusion and Manufactured Crises: A Case Study of Malaysia and Palm Oil, Libertiamo points out that since 2005, the European Commission has provided nearly 5million (MYR 19,7 million) to the World Wildlife Fund and 4 million (MYR 15,8 million) to Friends of the Earth. Climate Action Network (CAN) also received nearly 1 million (MYR 3.9 million) in the past two years alone.

Libertiamo noted that NGOs have become "peddlers of half truths to drive donations and attract government largesse. And donor governments support them, in the interest of uncompetitive domestic industries and neo colonial ambitions!"

Now that African nations have woken up to the vast economic potential of palm oil exports and have taken to cultivating palm oil earnestly, the officials who walk the halls of power in the EC are alarmed. Palm oil actually originated from Africa and most of the palm oil produced in Africa had been used for domestic consumption and so long as that was the scenario, the EC was happy to maintain the status quo.

However, as soon as the African nations, especially those in West Africa had invested in large scale commercial exploitation of what is a legitimate national aspiration – to improve their national economy, the EC decided to step in with the usual suspects, Greenpeace and WWF, surrogates used extensively in the EC’s efforts to stymie palm oil cultivation in SE Asia to do their dirty work and sow conflict driven PRESS RELEASES against palm oil cultivation in Africa!

The well worn lie, one dog-eared through overuse, of deforestation and land dislocation and displacement of local communities often used in their unsuccessful SER Asian battles, were dredged up and fed to international news media!

Note: The Palm Oil Truth Foundation (TRUTH Foundation) is an international non-governmental and not-for-profit organization, without strings to the world of commerce and power. We are a people organization, organized for the people and founded upon the principles of integrity and responsibility as a global citizen with the sole purpose of representing TRUTH to the global community about the health, environmental and economic benefits of palm oil. www.palmoiltruthfoundation.com
