    Mongolian Coin Toss Event

    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     konacraig captured these photos of a coin toss event taking place in the Ölgii province of Mongolia on October 8. "It was exciting to watch these riders, as young as 12 and as old as 80 participate in the event. This is the real deal. They competed for themselves, their families and their villages," he says. "It was exciting to feel and sense the horses as they ran towards you. No barriers separting you from the competitors. All your senses were activated." His first image was featured as CNN's Travel Photo of the Day for May 20, 2013.

    One of the more interesting competitions we witnessed in Mongolia was a coin toss competition.

    The way the contest is played is a horseman races towards a coin placed in the dirt and swoops down and tries to pickup the coin.

    There were about 50 nomadic horseback riders who participated in the coin toss event during the Golden Eagle Festival near Olgii, Mongolia.

    It was interesting to watch rider after rider almost fall off their horse as they raced to see who was the fastest to locate and pickup the coin. The good news is no one fell off their horse. The crowd cheered as their favorite rider raced down the field. Kids as young as twelve and men as old as eight participated in the event.
