Shyrga Tartu Competition
The first major competition we witnessed at the 2012 Golden Eagle Festival in Western Mongolia was the Shyrga Tartu competition. The Golden Eagles swoop down from a mountain top and try and grab a fox or wolf pelt being dragged behind the owner's horse. The eagle is judged on the time it take and skill and accuracy.
During this 3 hour competition some eagles flew off or missed their targets. Nomads from 100 kilometers away attended this annual event. The crowd numbered over 2000 people. Each cheered for their favorite eagle.
The winners received a medal at the end of the event.
