As many people mentioned, Onkyo has issues with their HDMI boards going bad. The issue is that heat produced by the receiver is drying up some capacitors on the HDMI board. From what I have read so far, the question is not IF HDMI board on any of these receivers will die, but WHEN.
I started having intermittent sound issues with the unit about 2 years after purchasing it (ex. when the warranty expired) - usually turning the unit off and on restored the sound. A few months later and now turning the unit off and on again does not help. The fact that this is such a frequent issue and Onkyo is not fixing it makes me think of what kind of company Onkyo is. No Onkyo receivers for me anymore.

It was great for most of the first year, but then we started having intermittent sound problems where it would go out no matter what was selected. To fix it, all we had to do was unplug the receiver for about 30 seconds, then plug it back in and all would be back to normal. Now almost 3 years in, the sound will not come back no matter what we do. Sadly, we spent a lot of money barely three years ago and now we have to buy a new receiver.

This thing has been garbage from the beginning. The unit shut itself down and had to be factory reset. I got a replacement and it has the same issues.
Also whenever changing modes, it makes a VERY LOUD POP which is much louder than the signal. This happens when the TV channel switches from a show to a commercial, because the audio mode is different and the stupid amp loses its mind.
I have been a huge Onkyo fan for many years and have purchased many, many of their amps. But after this one I will NEVER again buy Onkyo.
From now on, Denon only for me.

WARNING DO BUY ONKYO RECIEVERS!! THEY HAVE A SEVERE QUALITY ISSUE. GOOGLE "ONKYO TX-SR707 NO SOUND". THIS AFFECTS MANY OF THEIR A/V MODELS AND GETTING WARRANTY REPAIR IS PAINFULL!! LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE...

I purchased this receiver 3 years ago based on reviews I had read. My mistake was not reading and researching further on the negative reviews on this product. After 3 years this receiver produces no sound on any channel. I've taken it in for repair and the cost to fix it would be $510. I've contacted Onkyo support by phone, email and written a letter. To date still no resolution nor any effort to contact me by phone. I've been a loyal Sony customer for the past 25 years and made the mistake of going with Onkyo. This is the first and last time I will purchase an Onkyo product. Below are other comments that I found regarding the same problem. I would expect this issue to exist with other Onkyo receivers as well.

I have owned my 707 since Christmas of 2009. About 4 months ago I had to start resetting my 707 every couple of weeks due to no sound. The problem became more frequent as time went on and it got to the point where I was resetting it every day. Then about two weeks ago it just stop producing any sound what so ever, no matter how many times I reset the receiver. well it had been more than two years since I bought the thing and was out of warranty. I goggled the 707 and found that I was not the only one affected by this, in fact I think every one who owned one had the same issue. So I called Onkyo and at first got the run around, Then a sale associate called me back that night and told me that it was a known issue and to contact the parts department. So I did the next day and they sent me an email asking me for model# serial# and description of the issue. that afternoon I was issued a reply email with a one time warranty extension and was told to ship it to ABL Electronics to be repaired. I already had packing material so it only cost me 28 bucks with shipping insurance. They are now waiting an a part# 98684. Not sure what that is but will post a new update once I get it back.

Christmas 2011 it died the first time. Still under warranty thank god. Was fixed and returned. Died again mid june 2012. No more warranty. To expensive to fix. Save yourself the trouble. Dont buy onkyo. They don't stand behind their product. Now I have speakers that are doing nothing until I can afford a new one. Money does not grow on trees in my house. I saved for two years for my setup. So sad...

I purchased this receiver in early 2010 and it was fantastic -but just a few months after my warranty ran out I got the dreaded no sound problem that is plaguing this receiver and seemingly affecting hundreds of people. I will never ever ever buy another Onkyo product again and I plan to spread the word. They do not seem to be issuing a recall for this item that is obviously defective. It requires me turning off and on the unit multiple times for it to get audio - sometimes it takes me 20 minutes of doing this before it works. This is so frustrating. I will sadly be shopping for a new receiver as I researched and the repair will cost more than half the price of a new one.
A very unhappy customer.

I purchased this amp at a brick and mortar about 2 years ago at a great price. This purchase was based on recommendations at the time and to be honest this was a truly great amp with awesome sound.
However as you no doubt will have read by now (I certainly have) it has issues with not outputting sound after a period of time.
Sure enough 24.5 months in and the amp lost the speaker connections (at least thats what it shows on your display) and has no sound. If you google this issue you will find a ton of people with the same problem. You can verify the issue by plugging in headphones and switching to tuner mode and you will hear audio no problems at all. At this point you have to turn off and on the amp until you do eventually get sound back. This however is temporary and disappears again when you next turn the amp off.
The forums also show mixed messages from Onkyo with some receiving great service and an upgrade to an NR809 but this is sporadic and even that unit has a press release over issues with it.
What is funny (and not in a haha kind of way) is that most people like me are seeing this issue at warranty end or just before/after.
Great amp, let down completely by QC. This issue is well documented yet there still has not been a mass extension of manufacturer warranty/recall etc to take care of this problem.
So my recommendation to you is to look elsewhere. This was my first and until I see QC improve last Onk
