Wave of arrests in north-east Iran
Agents from Iran's Ministry of Intelligence (which is also responsible for suppressing religious minorities), have arrested 14 Bahais in the city of Gorgan, Golestan Province. A further 4 Bahais have been arrested in the city of Minudasht, in the same province. A further two Bahais are being sought in Gorhan: they were not at home when the agents raided their home. A number of other Bahai homes in Gorgan were raided, without arrests. The agents confiscated computers, religious books and images, and family photograph albums.
The Bahai Faith was born in Iran in the 19th century, and is Iran's largest non-Muslim religious minority today. It has been persecuted and suppressed in Iran since its birth. Since Iran's 1979 revolution, Bahais have been barred from higher education and from working in many economic sectors, as part of a government policy intended to confine them to an underclass.
