    The siege to the Parliament

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     TTeixeira snapped these photos of people protesting against recent austerity measures in front of the Parliament in São Bento, Portugal, on Monday, October 15. "I was looking at all of this and feeling sorry for the people that were suffering. It was intended as a peaceful demonstration," she says. "People became more aggressive and the feeling of revolt was in the air. They incited the police to join them and as the police did not move they started pulling down the metal rails that prevent the access to parliament."
    - Anika3, CNN iReport producer

With these black and white images I want to record the feeling of revolt I saw in most of the citizens and activists in São Bento that night, the night of the siege to the Parliament. The purpose was to protest peacefully against the recent rise of taxes and the budget for 2013. People feel that the government and Troika are taking everything from them… With the constant rise of taxes, that most of Portuguese people cannot afford to pay, "They" are leading us to poverty and to a life with no dignity and no hope. So, the protesters shouted “the budget will not be approved”… Songs were sang, one of them , “Os vampiros” de Zeca Afonso, quite evocative of similar situations in our not so distant past “The vampires” … it says… “”They” eat everything, “They” eat everything , “They” eat everything and leave nothing behind…
