UNREST AND STRUGGLE OF FREEDOM IN ZANZIBAR

In the last three days Zanzibar has witnessed the worst clashes between the Police and the youth. This latest turn of events came after one of the leader of the movement  which has inspired the youth was kidnapped by people who are believed to be member of the security forces. The youth immediately after knowing one of their charismatic leader has dissappeared took to the streets. the situation became volatile until last night he was released. Jubilations and calm returned to Zanzibar following his release. However this was short lived for one day. Today the 20 th of October in the afternoon all the leaders of the Uamsho have been detained.. This will definitely plunged the country into a cycle of violence and uncertainity.

    Why has this happened?

    Fact:

1.Zanzibar has the worst unemployment of its youth which could reach 50 percent..

2.Majority of its people are below poverty line who are struggling to get one meal a day.

3.Health , and Hospitals are very poor with no proper equipment, medicines or doctors. Those capable often go to Daressalam to seek treatment. The majority will have to struggle witout treatment.

4.Running water in Zanzibar town is still rationed . some areas of town dont get running water for days and weeks.

    5. cost of living is so high and the only way people can live normal life is through corruption. The leaders including the Ministers, legislators  and head of Security forces are probably the people who live normal life due to high salaries.

    6. in order to maintain status quo they use whatever means at their disposal to silence the people who are struggling their ends meet.

The other interesting fact is that of a Union of Tanzania. This Union which was formed between Zanzibar and Tanganyika in 1964 has been as one sided . The Zanzibaris feel they dont get a fair share of any International aid that is given to Tanzania. They are claiming to get only 4 percent that is given to Tanzania. Worse , their leaders are nominated by Mainland  who ensure they install leaders who can listen to the demands of giant Mainland. Worst than this , these leaders installed  including President of Zanzibar has no authority to join any International Organization or travel to any country to enter into any agreement with another country without the approval of Mainland.  In short for the last 48 years since the formation of union, Zanzibaris have seen a downward decline of the standard of living  and wants their sovereighnity back. They would like CNN to assist them intheur aspirations and publicizev these to the world as they have no media capability which is controlled by Government which does not hesitate to demonize these youth who are struggling to get nothing but just to live like any free human being in USA or Free Europe.
