    Shashthi : the 6th day of Durga Puja

     
    In Bengal the festival starts from ‘Shashthi’ – the sixth day in the lunar cycle after the ‘Mahalaya’.

    Durga Puja is generally celebrated for 5 days in Bengal -‘Shashthi’, ‘Saptami’, ‘Ashtami’ , ‘Nabami’ and ‘Dashami’, the last day. All these days are knows as ‘Tithi’. The names of the ‘Tithis’ have come from Sanskrit – these are the 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th day of the lunar cycle before the full moon in the month of ‘Aashwin’, the sixth month in Bengali Calendar. The exact time of worship depends on the position of the moon.

    This year the puja timings are as follows:



    PANCHAMI – 19th October Friday (2nd Kartik 1419): From that day 9.10 am – Next day 6.48am

    SHASHTI – 20th October Saturday (3rd Kartik 1419): “Kalparambho”: 9.27am
    Durga Devi “BODHON” “Amantran” and “Adhibas” in the evening. From that day 6.49am – Next day 4.32am

    SAPTAMI – 21st October Sunday (4th Kartik 1419): “Nabo Patrika” Within 9.27am Predawn bathing of “Kola Bow”. From that day 4.33am-Next day 2.28am

    ASHTAMI – 22nd October Monday (5th Kartik 1419): SANDHI PUJA 12.17 am – 1.05 am. SACRIFICE- 12.41 am. From that day 2.29am – Next day 12.41am

    NABAMI – 23rd October Tuesday (6th Kartik 1419): From that day 12.42 am-Next day 11.15 am

    DASHAMI – 24th October Wednesday (7th Kartik 1419): Bhasan (Immersion) within 9:27am. From Previous day 11.16pm – that day 10.12pm
