    Orionid meteor shower

    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     renataxxx says she got up early on October 21 in order to catch a glimpse of the Orionid meteor shower. She used a Canon 5DMKII camera to capture a long-exposure shot of the meteor shower. She says she saw a few exceptionally bright "shooting stars" in the sky while watching the meteor shower. 'It was not one of the most "fruitful" meteor showers, however, the ones that I did see were strong and bright, and a couple of them had smoke tails,' she said. She describes the meteor shower as being magical. 'You have to make the most of it while you can,' she said. You can see more of her photograph on her website.

    Orionid meteor shower (Orionids for short) consist of remains of Halley comet, that has travelled through inner solar system 26 years ago. It has got it's name after the star constellation Orion. It has peaked during Sunday morning hours, 21. October 2012.

     

    The picture is a composite of 6 exposures: one with the stones and 5 with meteors. I have used star constellation of Orion as a reference to align them to compensate for Earth's movement.

     

    In couple of hours(after that clouds took over) I have seen about 15 meteors. My sensor has missed couple of textbook meteors: huge, bright, and with smoke.
