    Mongolian Petroglyphs

    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     konacraig shot these photos of Mongolian petroglyphs about 50 kilometers south of Olgii in Western Mongolia on Wednesday, October 3. "It felt like is was 3,000 years back in time," he says. "It was a cold and a barren place, and one could feel how it might have been when ancient nomads lived in the area." His last image was selected as CNN's Travel Photo of the Day for December 13, 2012!

    We have a day to explore while we were in Western Mongolia when my daughter and I heard from a nomad that bronze age petroglyphs were in the area. We located a Russian 4 wheel drive truck and set out. The initial estimate was a 3 kilometer drive and 10 minutes turned out to be a 50 kilometer drive over 2 hours driving through streams, washout roads and sheer desolate conditions.

    Our first archeological site was a burial mound and burial marker. Continuing down the unmarked road/trail we reached a petroglyphs. A hike up a hill revealed beautiful carvings on the rocks which date back to the bronze age. We were accompanied by a professor who received a PHD in Mongolian petroglyphs. He claimed he had spent 20 years traversing Mongolia documenting all the sites.
