    Another Tibetan Self-Immolates

    Labrang, Amdo | October 23, 2012

On Tuesday, second Tibetan elder man have self-immolated in Labrang in protest of China's policies in Tibet. Dorjee Rinchen, 57, a farmer is believed to have died after his protest according to International Campaign for Tibet (www.savetibet.org).

Dorjee set his body on fire in the main street in Labrang, Amdo (Chi: Xiahe, Gannan, Gansu) and local Tibetans have taken his body to perform ritual rites.

This is the second self-immolation protest in two days in the town of Labrang despite the fact that the town is virtually locked down with armed Chinese military personnel.

In the last few years, increasing number of Tibetans are resorting to this tragic yet powerful protest to demand the Chinese government to change policies in Tibet.

In October, six Tibetans have set their bodies on fire and died. There have been 58 confirmed self-immolations in Tibet since 2009 and majority of them happened in the last year.

All Tibetan self-immolators were known to have shouted for the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Freedom in Tibet. Few have left powerful messages behind.

Beijing has blamed the exile Tibetan leaders for these drastic actions even though self-immolators have clearly and directly challenged Chinese government's policies in Tibet, particularly Beijing's repeated bashing of Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.
