    The Hajj: Have you been?

    Hajj and its Message

Last week I had the opportunity to deliver a sermon to a gathering of private high school children in a chapel. I would like to share my message with you. My talk was about Eid ul Adha. I shared with the students the origin of the religions of this modern world. As you are all aware In the Jewish and Christian traditions, Ibrahim pbh is the father of the Israelites through his son Isaac. In the Islamic tradition, Ibrahim is a prophet in Islam, an ancestor of our beloved prophet Mohammed pbh, through Ishmael. Muslims regard him as an example of the perfect Muslim, and the revered reformer of the Kaaba in Mecca. We are here today to give thanks to Allah swt for all His blessings upon us. We are grateful for our good health, the ability to make decisions and the ability to learn amongst other blessings.
The month of ZulHaj is the last month of the Islamic calendar. It has significance in that on the 9th day of this month is the day of Haj. This day commemorate the sacrifice and unquestioning faith of the prophet Ibrahim for God or Allah swt.
The Haj is a gathering of more than 2 million Muslims from all over the world. In the pre-Islamic period the Christian Arabs pilgrimage included gathering around the Kaaba, which housed idols of pagan gods. The Haj has been traced back to 2000 BCE and our prophet Mohammed pbh performed Hajj in the 7th century.
Every year Hajj reminds us of the prophet Ibrahim’s sacrifice, dedication and love for Allah swt two million people gather in one place at the same time to ask for forgiveness, unity and strength. It is our duty as Muslims to carry this message even when we are not in Arafat. We must help the poor and those who are less fortunate. At IMANA we are always looking for volunteers to help us in our charitable work. Please join us to promote the practice of ethical medicine. May Allah swt give you health, happiness and prosperity.
    Ayaz M. Samadani M.D.
