War crimes tribunal of Bangladesh: "Army, not Sayedee, responsible for killing Bhagirathi" by Ganesh
A volte face witness on Tuesday held Pakistan occupation army responsible for brutally killing his mother Bhagirathi Saha, a spy of freedom fighters working as a char lady at Pirojpur makeshift army camp during the Liberation War in 1971.
While making his deposition, DW-17 Ganesh Chandra Saha told the International Crimes Tribunal-1 that he had seen her mother with roughed-up body lying dead on the char of a river. “I had also marked five uniformed army men on a jeep nearby the body, but I could not understand their language while talking.”
“When they left the place with the jeep, I didn’t see any razakar along with them,” said the DW.
Narrating his mother’s role during the Liberation War, Ganesh said his mother had given refuge the freedom fighters at her house and from time to time used to divulge information collected from the makeshift army camp to the freedom fighters.
“My mother used to go to work at the army camp in the morning and returned home at night,” said Ganesh, adding that his mother never disclosed to her family members about the talks she had with the freedom fighters.
The DW told the tribunal that he had heard from the people about the army torture his mother suffered and she was dragged out from the camp with persecution and later tied her hands and waist with ropes. “My mother was dumped after a jeep trailed her with its hooks on the way to the riverside,” recalled Ganesh in tearful eyes.
The deposition over, the DW was cross-examined by prosecutor Syed Haider Ali.
During the cross-examinations, Ganesh told the tribunal that he had never seen any razakar in his area during the Liberation War. “But I came to know that razakars were used to capture people for killing or help killing.”
Denying a prosecution suggestion, Ganesh told the tribunal, “It’s not true that accused Delwar Hosaain Sayedee of Parerhat was directly involved in the killing of my mother.
“It’s also not true I gave my evidence concealing the truth in the killing episode of my mother, a martyred.”
