Pakistan's Industrial Hub in the line of fire?
Television channels reported the horrific expressions of bystanders on the scene as they saw workers jump out of the factory building in desperate attempts to save their lives. Firefighters battled to control the commotion but after hours of struggling they were only able to recover charred bodies beyond recognition.
The owners of Ali Enterprises (garment factory) have been charged for not ensuring enough safety for the employees inside the factory as the media clearly highlighted that the emergency exits of the factory were locked.
As far as my opinion goes, I think ‘Karachi Inferno’ as the incident became known, serves as an eye opener for not just the government authorities but also for us, because we are the citizens of this country. As much as we blame the government and concerned authorities for their negligence have we ever thought how ignorant we are at a personal level? Do we install safety equipment like fire extinguishers at our homes? Lastly, have we ever thought about ‘learning’ or getting interested in knowing about the basic fire fighting techniques?
To blame others is easy, but to bring a change in your own self is difficult.
