Election 2012: Your stories
Gay, Male, American
And so, when I hear that a presidential candidate does not think that I should EVER be able to marry, that I should NEVER be allowed to have a child, that I should NEVER have the same rights as my friends and family who are straight, it immediately sends up huge warning signals. Warning – Here is someone who, if given the opportunity, will hurt you. Who will feel a sense of superiority while hurting you. Who will feel that same sense of superiority when hurting other people who they deem to be “less than” themselves. Because throughout the course of human history, there have always been minorities who have been deemed “less than,” who have been deemed unworthy of equal rights.
And yet, throughout the course of human history, there have also always been people who have fought for the rights of those who have been the victims on the fringes of society. I’m not talking in grandiose, abstract terms here – Right now, right here, our President is standing up for and defending my rights. If you choose to turn a blind eye to this, if you choose to talk about abstract tax policies, who America “used” to be, and vague generalities about “family values,” I take it personally. I take it PERSONALLY. It hurts my SOUL to know that there are people out there who think that they are better than me and that I am not equal to them.
“All men (and women) are created equal.” This is my opinion. These are my values. This is MY America. And if you disagree, that’s your American right. But I reserve the right not to agree. And to ask, humbly, that you never. Enter. My. House. Again.
