Maine's Waldo-Hancock Bridge, a 1931 David Steinman-designed suspension bridge, is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is scheduled for demolition to begin on November 1, 2012 and take several months. Many individuals and groups have voiced their desire to preserve the bridge as a pedestrian bridge to no avail. Their pleas have fallen on deaf ears.

With the tallest public bridge observatory in the world built just a few feet away from the Waldo-Hancock Bridge, the area has become a destination.

Osprey and Maine endangered peregrine falcons - the fastest bird/animal in the world - have nested on the bridge for years and will be forced to move.
