Oglethorpe University Celebrates Another National Title

Last night at East Lake Golf Club in Decatur the Oglethorpe University Men's Golf team, family and friends were all smiles as they celebrated Oglethorpe's second National Championship in the last four years.

The night started with a congratulatory speech by Oglethorpe University’s President, Larry Schall, and Athletic Director, Becky Hall. After dinner and desserts guests and athletes enjoyed a well prepared multimedia presentation that recapped the Stormy Petrels road to the championship.

Shortly after dinner, the awards ceremony kicked off with Coach Jim Owen awarding the team with their tenth Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Champions Award.

Next came the All-Conference awards that were accepted by Eric Quinn, Anthony Macaglia, Hayden Jones and Matt Rebitch followed up by the Academic Honor Roll Awards received by Matt Rebitch, Kantaro Toyota and Patrick Cansfield.

Freshman phenom Anthony Maccaglia was awarded with Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Freshman-of-the-Year. Maccaglia also took home the Arnold Palmer Award and Phil Mickelson Award, which honors the Division III Most Outstanding Freshman of the Year.

Closing out the awards were Eric Quinn, who was nominated Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Player-of-the-Year, and Matt Rebitch who was crowned All-American Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Last season the Stormy Petrels only lost 3 seniors after graduation and are sure to be leading the competition as they head into the 2012-2013 season.
