Remembering MLK |
Balcony of Lorraine Motel with Sniper's Nest in Distance
I was 10-years-old when Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. I'll never forget turning on the news and seeing Chet Huntley and David Brinkley announcing King's assassination. It was devastating, even for a 10-year-old. The year before his assassination, King visited my hometown of Springfield, NJ and gave a speech at the temple I belonged to. It was one of the most moving experiences of my young life, seeing this passionate, committed man, discussing equality in America, and explaining that all of us have a responsibility in its success. The U.S. has never been the same since King's death. The attached photo is from our visit to the Lorraine Motel in 2006. It shows the exact spot on the balcony where King stood when he was cut down. In the distance you can see the rooming house where the fatal shot was fired from.
