Junior iReporter Covers Hurricane Sandy
This morning, as the rain bands from Hurricane Sandy pushed against our island home, my son stood next to my bed with his CNN hat, rain poncho, and microphone. “Come on Mom! We have a story to tell!”
I realized that my love for iReporting has now become a passion for our son Wyatt. For the past two and half years I have involved my family in my iReporting. Many times Wyatt has been the focus of my reporting. We have shared our journey of overcoming his challenges with Autism, Apraxia and a limb difference.
Today was an opportunity for a teachable moment. School had been canceled due to expected winds of over 35 miles per hour – a hazard for school bus and student safety.
As I grabbed my camera I said, “Let’s hurry before the next band comes in.” Wyatt said, “Mom, what do you mean? What does a ‘band’ have to do with a hurricane?” I thought it was a cute and curious question. I began to explain what happens when a hurricane moves past.
As we drove down the street to Jaycee Beach we marveled at the gusts of wind. Wyatt began his broadcast from the backseat of the car….”Hello! My name is James Wyatt Falardeau! I am reporting for CNN-iReport live from Jaycee Beach! Parents please bring your animals and your children’s toys.
I reminded Wyatt to speak slowly and loudly. His excitement was hard to contain as he continued to “script.”
In less than a few minutes we were set up on the board walk. Wyatt was a “one take wonder!” We hope that you enjoy our weather broadcast from our junior iReporter! Stay safe – be safe!
