    High Expectations Asian Father Meme

    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     kimchi316 dressed up as the high expectation Asian dad Internet Meme last Halloween. 'It was really cheap and easy to make, and it's just simple poster board and two colored sheets of paper,' he said. He says his friends who were familiar with this specific Internet meme really appreciated his costume. 'My friends thought it was really clever. It was sort of that moment when you get an inside joke,' he said.

    Last Halloween when I was living in Denver, Colorado, I donned the High Expectations Asian Father meme for my costume. HEAF is a meme based on the cliche stereotype that first generation Asian parents are overwhelmingly strict.
    Wearing this easy-to-make poster board yielded several results. The ones who were familiar with the original reference enjoyed the inside joke that the internet has created. Others who weren't aware of the HEAF joke, particularly those from my hometown, believed I was trying be a meme myself, probably along the lines of an Asian "model minority" meme.
