Sandy pounds North Carolina
- Christi, CNN iReport producer
Hurricane Sandy pounded the beaches near Wilmington, NC on Saturday with heavy surf, wind, rain and dangerous tides.
Authorities are anticipating localized flooding by Sunday morning while tropical storm conditions are expected to continue throughout the day.
In Carolina Beach, streets had emptied by late Saturday afternoon with winds gusting at 35 to 40 miles per hour.
Waves topping 10 to 12 feet closed the town's busy fishing pier while the storm surge drove away even the most enthusiastic surfers.
Carolina Beach officials on Friday drained a part of the town's small lake in anticipation of high water. Authorities also closed flood-prone Fort Fisher Recreation Area at Kure Beach until Monday.
