    Circle rainbow?

Hello my name is Alexander Bedon from flushing NY, Today I went on a annual pilgrimage to the national shrine of the immaculate conception in Washington DC and upon arriving we see this halo around the sun that looked like a rainbow, it was amazing! We were a church group so most said the obvious, a miracle from god, but as a science major I'd like to know the scientific explanation to this. I googled it and I read somewhere it has to do with a nearby storm (sandy) making clouds go up to 20,000 feet high. But still don't get it. Hope this makes it to the tv with some explanation!
