Freeport, Long Island, Prepares For the Worst

On Saturday, October 29 at 11:50 AM, Freeport Long Island gets ready for what could be torrential rains and 60 to 80 mile hr. gusts later this evening when the worst of Superstorm Sandy roars by. Even at this early time of day, thunder can be heard as the warm air of Hurricane Sandy slams into the cold front moving in from the north.

Traffic is barricaided from Atlantic Avenue, south to the shore of Long Island in expectation of a storm surge combined with a full moon high tide as streets even at this northern location begin to flood. Meadowbrook Parkway, south of Merrick Road is closed and police guard the southbound entrance ramp. Traveling on Merrick Road, one observes many boarded up plate glass store fronts and emergency as well as media vehicles speed by.
