    NYC underground transformer explodes, On fire right now

    CNN PRODUCER NOTE     iReporter gareau in New York's Upper East Side woke up to a bang this morning and rushed out of his apartment to find smoke billowing from beneath the street. It appears that a transformer blew, causing dozens of firefighters, police officers and medics to rush to the scene, he says. Luckily no-one appears to have been injured. Our iReporter, who works at Rockefeller University in the city, says that his own experience of Superstorm Sandy was not as bad as many - his building retained power and he has not lost possessions, but he feels very sad for those who have lost their lives or homes. "For me it's been an inconvenience, for most it's been a tragedy," he says.
