CNN PRODUCER NOTE Photographer and filmmaker JodiKaplan captured these images of Halloween trick or treaters and costumer wearers in often surreal scenes amid the detritus left in New York City's Upper West Side by Superstorm Sandy. "What was striking was that the stores did not have any decorations - or had tape and boards over the front windows," she said. "Those that were open were almost all out of candy, so these little trick-or-treaters were running frantically from door to door to try to get candy." Despite the clear looks of enjoyment on children's faces, the adults' actions told a different story, she said. "Underneath the merriment there was a tone of almost guilt, as we knew that the lower half of Manhattan could not participate [because of the storm]," she said. "All the phone conversations I overheard were about the hurricane."
